🧐 Wix, Squarespace or WordPress?!

November 16, 2022

When it comes to clients, one of the very first questions we get asked is “What platform do you use to build websites”?

While we build exclusively in WordPress, you may wonder if that’s the best platform for your business website.

At Drio we are working with mostly small to mid-sized nonprofits and service-based businesses that have been in business for at least 5 years and are on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th iteration of their website. For these clients, WordPress is the perfect platform.  They are looking for a CMS (content management system), not just a website builder and they want the flexibility of the website to grow as their team, services and needs grow as well.

So, when would we recommend a website builder such as Wix or Sqaurespace over WordPress?

The short answer is, we wouldn’t and so we don’t recommend Wix or Squarespace.

These website builders are not well-suited for the types of businesses that Drio works with.  They don’t offer the flexibility to add-on new features such as advanced database set-ups, custom form functionality, etc.  Wix and Squarespace are great for getting the 1st iteration of your new small business off the ground, but the lack of customization is a big reason why we steer clear.

Another concern with Wix and Squarespace is that you aren’t able to move that website away from their platform.  If you leave, you leave your website behind.

With the open-source set-up of WordPress, you are able to own your web files and can take your website and move it around to different web hosts.

Something that is extremely important to note here though is, with the additional sophistication and flexibility of WordPress comes a greater need for security.  When you are on a platform such as WIx or Squarespace they handle the security for you.  If you build a website on WordPress you will be required to handle your own security.

For Drio’s clients we handle all of the security for them as part of our WordPress Hosting and Care Plan.

Our clients don’t just contract with us to build their website, they also contract with us to keep their website secure and maintained on our server. We handle all of the security updates and vulnerabilities for them as they arise, while they enjoy the perks of having a flawlessly built website that will grow and expand with their business as needed.
